For far too long the production of good quality web graphics has been a complicated activity where the opaqueness of HTML coding to ordinary people has been a barrier to the efficient spread of graphics-rich information on the Web. With the formal recognition of the Extensible Markup Language in 1998 by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) there is now a universal format, known as XML, for presenting structured documents and data on the Web. SVG is the language for describing two-dimensional graphics in XML. It handles three types of graphic objects: vector graphic shapes (paths consisting of straight lines and curves); images and text. Graphical objects can be grouped, styled, transformed and composited into previously rendered objects. Text can be in any XML namespace and this enhances searchability and accessibility of the SVG graphics. W3C defines the design goals for XML (and thus SVG) as being - straightforwardly usable; support a variety of applications; have a minimum of optional features; be 'human-legible', clear in coding content and support the quick and easy creation of versatile graphic designs. Accordingly the way is now clear for efficient and timely real-time communication on the internet without the intricacies of text-driven graphics coding. The W3C principals are consistent with the basic rules that have governed the development of FlowMap Software since 1992 so it is not surprising that FlowMap provides an attractive SVG engine for non-specialist users. In fact, FlowMap Software provides arguably the easiest, most reliable and economic means of creating business graphics documents for the web, or the corporate intranet, that is available at the price. Easy to create screen-designs can be prepared in FlowMap and then coded directly into SVG simply at the press of a mouse-button! To appreciate examples of SVG graphics which can be created by FlowMap Software you will need to ensure that your internet browser has been upgraded with Adobe's SVG Viewer (v3). Click here to test your browser and see if you need to visit the Adobe SVG Viewer download site to upgrade. See top of page for SVG example links. |
